Abstract

1280749 Over-based sulphurized and carboxylated phenates MARUZEN OIL CO Ltd 18 June 1970 29694/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Over-based sulphurized and carboxylated phenates are prepared by (a) mixing at least one phenol of the Formula I (where R is an alkyl group and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3), 0À5-4À5 g. of elementary sulphur per mol of compound I, at least 7 equivalents of an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide per equivalent of hydroxyl radical in compound I and at least 0À5 mol per mol of said alkaline earth metal compound of a C 2-6 dihydric alcohol, (b) heating the resultant mixture to effect sulphurization and metal addition reactions in parallel at a temperature of 110-200‹ C. in the presence of at least 0À5 times the weight of compound I of a C 9-24 alcohol having a boiling point higher than the said dihydric alcohol (c) distilling the reaction mixture at a temperature below 200‹ C. to remove substantially all the water formed by the reactions and a major portion of unreacted dihydric alcohol and (d) heating the distillation residue at 70-200‹ C. with carbon dioxide in the presence of the C 9-24 alcohol, the weight ratio of the alcohol to compound I being at least 10À5 : 1 and optionally (f) heating at least one equivalent of an alkali earth metal oxide or hydroxide per equivalent of hydroxyl radical in compound I and at least 0À5 mol of the C 2-6 dihydric alcohol per mol of alkaline earth metal reagent used at 20- 200‹ C., distilling off below 200‹ C. substantially all the water formed and a major portion of unreacted dihydric alcohol and heating the distillation residue with carbon dioxide at 70- 200‹ C. A lubricating oil may be added to the reaction, as a diluent, before or during any of the above steps.
