Abstract

1392743 Oil soluble metal sulphonates CONTINENTAL OIL CO 19 April 1972 [14 May 1971] 26849/74 Divided out of 1392741 Headings C5G and G1A1 The invention comprises a process for the preparation of oil soluble metal sulphonates which comprises: (a) reacting a metal oxide or hydroxide with an alcohol having a boiling point of at least 100‹C. in the presence of an oil soluble sulphonic acid at a temperature just below the boiling point of said alcohol for an effective period of time for the formation of the corresponding alkoxide, the alcohol being present in a stoichiometric excess with respect to the metal compound; (b) azeotropically removing the water formed in step (a); (c) reacting said alkoxide with an oil soluble sulphonic acid, said alkoxide being present in a stoichiometric excess with respect to said acid, in the presence of a non-volatile carrier at 50- 150‹C. for an effective period of time for the formation of said metal sulphonate; and (d) recovering a solution of 20-90 wt. per cent of metal sulphonate in said non-volatile carrier. Metals disclosed are B, Si, P, As, Se, Sc, Y, La, Ti, Zr, V, An, and Sb and a definition of oil soluble sulphonic acid is provided.
