Abstract

1410328 Alkoxylating fluoroalcohols UNILEVER Ltd 20 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59295/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] Fluoroalcohols of the general formula wherein X denotes H or F and n is from 5 to 12, are alkoxylated by reacting with ethylene or propylene oxide firstly in the presence of a catalytic amount of an elemental alkali metal or an alkali metal hydroxide and subsequently in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acidic catalyst. The basic catalyst results in the formation of monoalkoxylates and the acid catalyst results in the subsequent formation of polyalkoxylates, preferably having 10 to 16 alkoxyl units. Temperatures of both stages are preferably in the range 70‹ to 110‹ C. and suitable acid catalysts are BF 3 , SbCl 5 or SnCl 4 . Examples describe the preparation of mono- and poly-adducts in which n is 7, 8 or 9 and X is H or F. Uses.-The polyadducts are useful as non- ionic surfactants.
