Abstract

Lubricating compositions, and lubricant additive concentrates, comprise at least 20% of mineral lubricating oil, and the following additives: (A) 0.1-79 weight per cent of an oil-soluble calcium sulphonate, (B) 0.1-79 weight per cent of an oil-soluble barium salt either of a sulphonic acid or of a phosphorus acid derived from the reaction of an aliphatic hydrocarbon or a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon with a phosphorus halide or sulphide, (C) 0.1-4 weight per cent of anthranilic acid, and (D) 0.01-40 weight per cent of a salt prepared by reacting a mixture of 1 mole of an alkylphenol and 1-2 moles of a formaldehyde producing reagent in the presence of a catalyst at 10-99 DEG C. and thereafter reacting said mixture with CaO or Ca(OH)2 at a temperature of at least 30 DEG C. Additives (A) and (B) may be derived from petroleum or synthetic sulphonates, and may be in carbonated, basic form. Optional additives mentioned include zinc and barium organic phosphorodithioates, sulphurized or phosphosulphurized terpenes and fatty materials, zinc and cadmium organic mono- and dithiocarbamates, organic phosphites, polysiloxanes, and polyacrylate V.I. improvers.
