Abstract
952,213. Rack and pinion steering gear. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDEN) Ltd. Fob. 23, 1962 [March 14, 1961], No. 9302/61. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division B7] In a vehicle steering gear wherein a pinion 4, Fig. 2, rotated by the steering wheel engages teeth on a flattened portion of a circular-section rack bar 1a linked to the road wheels, rotation of the rack bar is prevented by a spring-loaded plunger 18 engaging a keyway 20 in the rack bar to press it against the pinion teeth. An adjusting screw 22 limits the outward movement of the plunger, which may be metallic or non-metallic. In modifications, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), the plunger may be loaded by an adjustable cup spring or by a coil spring of conical form and may be mounted in a separate housing bolted on or adjustably threaded into the gear housing 2. The pinion shaft has plain or ball bearings 6, 7. The housing 2, Fig. 1, has a sleeve extension 3 carrying a bearing (not shown) for the outer end of the rack bar. The inner toothed end has a housing cap 8 and a flexible sleeve 16, having an end cap not shown, covers the sleeve 3 and has apertures receiving pins 11 which pass through a slot in the sleeve 3 and are threaded into diametral holes in the rack bar 1. The pins 11 are connected by a plate 12 and are coupled through non-metallic bushes 13 or through ball joints to steering links 15. In a modification the rack bar projects from the supporting sleeve 3 and is coupled at one or both ends to the steering links.
