952,077. Cigarette-making machines. I. M. CLARK. (G. Camberini). Aug. 19, 1960, No. 28883/60. Heading A2C. Tobacco is showered as by a conveyer belt 18, Fig. 2, on to a wheel 29 having a peripheral groove with a porous sintered metal or single or multiple wire gauze base through which suction is applied, the tobacco being deposited without re-arrangement of its strands on to a conveyer 25 arranged tangentially of the wheel 29 and which may be the paper tape of a rod-forming belt 24 of a continuous-rod machine as in Specification 707,239. Tobacco proud of the wheel groove is trimmed off by a knife 31 and removed by a pinned roller 32 and suction duct 133. A stationary suction cut-off member 30 is provided, and a suction hood 34 cleans the wheel 29. There is a compression roll 36. The belt 18 may be run in the same direction as the belt 24 instead of oppositely thereto, its delivery end projecting over the roll 36. The rod-former tongue may be vibrated relative to the belt 24. The belt 18 may be fed via a roller 19 from a suction roll 13, Fig. 1, having a suction cleaning hood 22 and on to which the tobacco thrown by a picker roll 8 from a hopper outlet drum 2 passes via rolls 11, 12 and a deflector 15 which is pivotable at 115 to allow a predetermined portion of heavy tobacco particles to pass to a belt 16 delivering to a bin 17 or back to the hopper. The roll 13 may have a porous sintered metal or single or multiple wire gauze surface and has a stationary suction cut-off member 14.
