Abstract

951,999. Stretching. FIELDING & PLATT Ltd. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962; July 25, 1962], Nos. 3326/62 and 28659/62. Heading B3E. [Also in Division E2] A gripper head for a metal stretching machine comprises at least two cross-beams connected together at each end by a horizontally disposed pin or the equivalent which co-operates with interengaging portions of the crossbeams and which in use of the gripper head is subjected to shear stresses. A gripper head comprises upper and lower crossbeams 1, 2, each carrying gripper jaws 7, the crossheads having at each end interfitting apertured lugs, through which a pin 6 passes to connect the crossheads together. Each pin may comprise a truncated wedge-shaped member 7 disposed between tapered segmental-sectioned members 6, 8. The member 7 is drawn into firm engagement with the member 6, 8, by tightening a nut 9 on a threaded extension 16 of the member 7 so as to bear through a washer 10 on the ends of the members 6, 8. The members 6, 8 are flanged at 11, 12. Lubricant passageways 13, 14, 15 are provided for high-pressure lubricant to be supplied to the mating surfaces of the members 6, 7, 8 to facilitate removal of the part 7.
