Abstract
951,851. Travelling wave tubes. TELEFUNKEN PATENTSVER WERTUNGS G.m.b.H. April 9, 1962 [April 19, 1961], No. 13563/62. Heading H1D. A periodic permanent magnetic focusing system for a travelling wave tube or other electron beam tube comprises a plurality of coaxially mounted, spaced, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, 1, 2, of alternating polarity, surrounded externally by a cylindrical ferromagnetic body 3 and of predetermined internal diameter, spacing and magnetic properties of material, wherein the outer diameter and axial thickness of the ring magnets are selected at such values that the curve of field strength in the longitudinal axis of the system is substantially sinusoidal in shape and has substantially maximum peak values, whereby for a given field strength the volumes and weights of the magnets are optionally minimum. The required dimensions are found by trial and error and two examples of dimensions are given. The cylindrical ferromagnetic body is not saturated. The spaces between the ring magnets are filled with air or with non-magnetic material, and there may be inner polepieces. The cross-section of the magnet rings is rectangular or is of decreasing cross-section proceeding outwardly. The magnet material may be OXIT 100 or OERSTIT 220.
