Abstract

951,750. Stuffing-box substitutes. LADISH CO. Jan. 19, 1963, No. 2436/63. Heading F2B. Sealing means for a rotary shaft 12 where it passes through a wall 18 comprises a sealing ring 22, preferably of carbon, drivably connected to the shaft by a metal ring 31 and axially urged into facial sealing contact with the wall by a rubber ring 30 in sealing contact with the shaft. The ring 31 has inner tangs 33 and outer tangs 32 which respectively engage slots 14 in a shoulder 13 on the shaft and openings 29 in a metal backing ring 27 having tangs 28 that engage recesses 25 in the carbon ring 22 which is sealed to the shaft by a rubber O-ring 24.. The ring 30 is compressed between the metal rings 27 and 31. The enlarged portion 11 of the shaft is sealed by a lip-type oil seal 6.
