951,737. Clothes driers. PLANET JIG & TOOL CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1961 [Nov, 24, 1961], No. 42183/61. Heading A4U. [Also in Divisions F4 and H5] An electric heating appliance for use as a clothes dryer, room heater or hair dryer comprises a moter 9, blower 10 and heating element 11 mounted on a vertical back plate, and a cover plate 3 which can be raised from a substantially vertical closed position to a horizontal open position. As shown, a fan 10 and heater 11 are arranged in a circular housing 8 which communicates with the centre of an open-ended, transverse duct 5. Air drawn through the ends of duct 5 is heated and emerges into outlet duct 14 which is of generally frusto-conical shape, Fig. 1 (not shown), and passes out through grille 16 or the lower end 15 of the duct according as valve 19 is closed or open. When the appliance is used as a room heater the cover plate 3 is in its vertical closed position, louvres being provided therein for the outlet of heated air. For use as a clothes or hair dryer the cover plate 3 is raised to its horizontal open position, clothes supporting rails being provided as shown, and a curtain being suspended from a rail 27 around the edge of plate 3. This curtain may be folded away in channels provided in back plate 1 when it is not in use. The fan may be used alone or with one or more heating elements and a thermostat may be provided. In an alternative arrangement the motor, blower and heating element are mounted at the bottom of the back plate so that heated air is blown upwards.
