Abstract

1332827 Hair drying and treating appliances SUNBEAM CORP 22 Dec 1970 [14 Jan 1970] 60887/70 Heading A5R A hair drying and treating appliance comprises a conduit 13 for delivering steam or air to a double-walled helmet, which may be of the type disclosed in Specification 1,304,560, a base 12 enclosing a steam generator 31 and a fan 41 driven by a motor 39 to pass air over a heater (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), a scroll wall 42 for directing air from the fan to conduit 13, manually operable means for selectively connecting the generator 31 or the motor 39 and the heater (32) to an electrical power source, means for delivering measured amounts of water into the generator 31, and a thermostatically controlled signalling means responsive to the temperature of generator 31, the themostatic control 92 being arranged so that only after a delay sufficient for substantially all the water and steam to be dissipated from generator 31, conduit 13 and the helmet, with the signalling means indicate to an operator that the appliance is ready for the fan and heater to be actuated by said manually operable means. The base 12 has upper 29 and lower 28 plastics-material members and a metal partition 38 supporting motor 39, heater (32) and generator 31, the upper member 29 having a recess 60, with graduation steps 61, into which water may be poured, the water flowing into generator 31 on opening a valve 70, 71 by means of a pushbutton 64. The generator 31 is cast in two aluminium parts 54, 56, the lower part 54 having a fillet 74 enclosing a sheathed heater 55. Steam passes from generator 31 via a conduit 81 and a grill 47 into conduit 13. Heated or cool air passes via an opening 45 in partition 38 and a passage 44 into the conduit 13 which is hinged at 48 to the base 12 and at (49), Fig. 6 (not shown), to the helmet so that the appliance may be collapsed with the helmet resting on top of the base. When substantially all the water and steam has been dissipated, the thermostat 92 de-energises the steam generator heater 55 and extinguishes an indicating lamp (88), Figs. 2, 7 (not shown), indicating to the user that the appliance is in a condition ready for operation of a switch (91) to energise the fan motor 39 only, to provide cool air, or the fan and the air heater to provide selectively medium or low temperature heated air.
