Abstract

873,047. Electric fan heaters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 21, 1959 [Sept. 16, 1958], No. 29650/58. Class 39(3). In an electric fan heater an auxiliary heating element 11, Fig. 3, may be connected in series with the main heating element 10 to give a lower degree of heating. The auxiliary heating element is of substantially thinner gauge wire and may thus be made shorter than element 10. A safety switch device 12 comprises a thermostatic disc switch 13 which opens the heater circuit when the air stream fails. When switch 20 is closed heating of the disc is effected only from the 2 kw heating element 10, but when switch 20 is opened putting elements 10 and 11 in series energy is dissipated at 1 kw and an additional series heater 17 is provided to heat the disc in order to compensate for the reduced energy dissipation element 10. The elements 10, 11, Fig. 2, are arranged on a support as shown, the auxiliary element 11 being disposed in the region where the air flow through the device is relatively slow. The device may have more than one auxiliary element, and a switch may be provided so that the device produces a cooling air stream by cutting out of circuit all the heating elements. The elements 10, 11 are of nickel-chrome alloy and support on insulating members (not shown).
