Abstract
A bimetal starting switch for a single phase asynchronous motor is opened by a first heater 7 of high thermal capacity, the heat stored therein being sufficient to keep the switch open until a second heater 9, shunting the contacts, heats up to maintain the contacts open for the remainder of the time that the motor is energized. The first heater 7, of carbon or silicon carbide, is in series with the bimetal 10 and the resistive type start winding 1 of the motor and preferably its resistance is 50% of the total. The second heater 9 preferably has a high positive temperature coefficient it remains in series with the winding 3 but reduces the current to a negligible value. As shown, the heater 9 is annular, and the bimetal strip 10 is attached to it by a rivet 11. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), the first heater is placed between two bimetal strips, each of which carries one of the contacts, and this heater is not part of the shunt path of the second heater.
