In a primary gear drive for a motor-cycle or moped, having a multi-disc clutch 6 between an input shaft 4 of a change-speed gear 10 and a gear-wheel 3 driven by a meshing wheel 2 on an engine crank-shaft 1, the usual separate splined hub carrying the inner clutch plates is eliminated by carrying the plates directly on a splined hub of the gear-wheel 3 itself. The gearwheel 3 bears directly on the gear input shaft 4 which improves tooth mesh in comparison with existing arrangements where the wheel is mounted on a separate bearing axially spaced from the plane of the wheel. A shell 5 for the outer clutch discs is secured directly to the gear input shaft 4 and the clutch is actuated by a rod 7. The clutch 6 is arranged between the wheel 3 and the change-speed gear, thus providing sufficient axial space between the wheel 3 and final output shaft 14 to accommodate a sliding key selector-rod 12.
