Abstract

915,505. Friction clutches; change-speed gear. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 5, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 16328/61. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A friction disc which may be used in a brake but which in the form shown is used in a clutch, comprises two recessed housing members 22, 24 secured together and filled with a metal alloy having a low-temperature melting-point, heat generated when the clutch &c. slips causing the alloy to melt, the latent heat of fusion thereof being absorbed and thus preventing excessive temperature rise of the disc. The recessed housing members 22, 24 may be made from copper, and secured together by rivets 38, the seams between the two members being closed by silver solder. The alloy 40 is of the eutectic type, e.g. lead and tin, silver and copper, copper and lead or tin. The outer periphery of the housing members is riveted to a ring 18. In the form shown, several discs 22, 24 are in splined engagement with a clutch drum 17 and are interleaved with plane discs 14 splined to a driving clutch sleeve 11. The clutch is engaged when liquid under pressure is admitted to the housing to bias a ring-shaped piston 50 leftwards against the bias of a spring 13. Planet pinions 25 carried by a driven shaft 15 mesh a ring gear 19 fast with the clutch sleeve 11 and a driving- shaft 10, and also mesh a sun gear 21 fast with the clutch drum 17. When the clutch 14, 22 &c. is engaged, the gear rotates solidly. By releasing the clutch and instead engaging a band brake (not shown) to station the clutch drum 17, the sun gear 21 is held stationary, and a reduced ratio drive is obtained between the driving and driven shafts 10, 15. The gearing may be used in an automatic transmission for a motor car, cushioning means (not shown) being provided to delay disengagement of the clutch until brake engagement has commenced, and vice versa.
