Abstract

950,987. Feeding webs. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. May 30, 1961 [May 30, 1960], No. 19482/61. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G5] A random storage tape bin for receiving a tape loop forming between the recording and scanning stations, 1 and 2 respectively, of a recording and scanning apparatus in operation has a single opening in the top of the bin which serves as an inlet and outlet for the tape. In one embodiment, Fig. 1a and Fig. 1c, the loop of the tape 4 is fed through an aperture 7 and is guided by a freely rotating roller 14, a leaf spring 12 and an extension 11 of the periphery wall 9 of the bin on to a drive friction member comprising a driven roller 13 having its peripheral surface formed of a material having a high coefficient of friction compared to that of the tape material. The leaf spring 12 which applies a force radially to the roller 13, also applies a tensioning force on the outgoing tape 4 travelling to the scanning station 2. In a modified form (not illustrated) the friction roller 13 is bobbin shaped, having at the two ends of the roller conical guide flanges separated by a cylindrical portion of the roller, between which flanges the incoming tape edges are gripped. In another embodiment Fig. 2, the driven friction member is a friction band 16 mounted over two rollers 17 and 18 one of which is driven. The storage bin is modified so that the bottom has a somewhat parabolic shape. In three other embodiments, Figs. 3a, 4a and 5a (not shown) the storage bin has a circular cross-section, the side walls of which may be mounted to rotate freely, or they may be rotated by the same means driving the friction means. This enables the outgoing tape to be withdrawn easily. In another embodiment of the feeding means, Fig. 4b, the driven roller 23 has a flange 35 and a sleeve 34 of a material with a higher coefficient of friction than the tape. The freely rotating guide roller 24 has a flange 36. With this arrangement, the tape 4 takes up the position shown. In two other embodiments of feeding means, Figs. 3b and 5b (not shown), each has one driven roller and a freely rotating guide roller.
