Abstract
950,746. Waveguide switches. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON - HOUSTON. Sept. 29, 1960 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 33474/60. Heading H1W. The ends of the discharge tubes of a gas switch extend into cylindrical cavities in the conducting walls of the switch which, together with the plasma enclosed in the tubes, form coaxial line wave-traps for preventing escape of energy. In Fig. 1, a non-metallized discharge tube 1 is shown extending into the wall 3 of the switch to form a coaxial line of length L of which the dielectric consists partly of the wall 4 of the tube and partly of the cylindrical air gap 2. The length L is made equal to an odd number (preferably one) quarter-wavelengths. The end of the tube rests on an insulating plug 5 located by a screw-threaded plug 6. In a modification (Fig. 2), the effective end of the line is formed by the open end of an annular choke slot 10, 11 and the line has an effective length D. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the air gap 2 is filled with metal braid whereby the dielectric of the coaxial line is composed entirely of the material of the tube.
