949,908. Combined shoe and disc brakes. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 13, 1962, No. 27108/62. Heading F2E. In a combined shoe and disc brake for railway vehicles, when a brake shoe 19 mounted on a longitudinally and angularly movable actuating rod 18 is moved to its locking position by operation of a fluid-pressure actuating cylinder 13, the angular movement of the actuating rod causes the ram of a doubleacting hydraulic cylinder 28 to force hydraulic fluid into the operating cylinder 29 of a spottype disc brake. The disc 31 of the disc brake is mounted on an axle 10 of the railway vehicle inboard of the wheel 12 of a wheel pair 8. When the brake shoe 19 is retracted by means of a spring 24 angular movement of the actuating rod 18 is prevented by means of a conical member 22 mounted on the rod 18 seating in a complementary-shaped recess in a fixed member 20. The member 22 may be adjustable in position along the length of the rod to permit adjustment for brake shoe wear.
