Abstract
948,957. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 8, 1962 [Oct. 13, 1961], No. 36863/61. Heading H1D. The evacuable chamber of a mass spectrometer ion source is provided with a transparent viewing aperture protected by a movable shutter which prevents the obscuring of the aperture by contaminating material emitted by the sample being ionized. As shown, an ion source comprises a chamber 1 having a transparent cover plate 3, insulating supports 5 which project inwardly through the cylindrical side wall 2 of the chamber for holding rods 6 of the sample material, mechanisms 8 for moving the supports 5, a shield 11 having an aperture 12 through which the rods 6 may be inspected, and a shutter 13, e.g. of tantalum, movable by a mechanism 16 so that it can be located between the aperture 12 and the cover 3 to prevent contamination of the latter when the sample material is ionized by producing a spark between the electrodes 6. The mechanism 16 includes a cam 24 mounted on a shaft 23 and attached to a bar 14 carrying the shutter 13, so that rotation of a hand wheel 25 moves the bar 14 into and out from the chamber 1. A mechanism including a magnet for moving the shutter 13 may replace the mechanism 16. In another embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the shutter is pivoted within the chamber 1 and can be rotated into its protecting position.
