Abstract
Optically active or racemic b -citronellol is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon mixture formed by the thermal rearrangement of optically active or racemic cis-pinone or trans-pinane, which mixture consists essentially of (-)-3 7-dimethyloctadi-1, 6-ene and/or (+)-3 7-dimethyloctadi-1, 6-ene, with an aluminium hydrocarbon, oxidising the resulting tricitronellyl aluminium to tricitronellyl aluminate and hydrolysing this compound to give the b -citronellol. The aluminium hydro carbon is preferably diisobutyl aluminium hydride. The hydrocarbon mixture is preferably distilled prior to reaction with the aluminium hydrocarbon wholly or partially to separate unreacted pinane and other hydrocarbons from the (-)-3, 7-dimethyloctadi-1, 6-ene and/or (+)-3, -7-dimethyloctadi-1, 6-ene.
