Abstract

An oxidant for use in liquid fuel rocket motors consists essentially of hydrogen peroxide of 30-100% by weight strength containing per litre from 50 to 750 milligrams (calculated as carbon) of an organic residue from the production of hydrogen peroxide from organic compounds or from the reaction of hydrogen peroxide or organic compounds. The residue probably contains organic peroxides and/or hydroperoxides and may be obtained in the production of hydrogen peroxide by the process using an alkyl anthraquinone described in U.S.A. Specification 2,158,525, a secondary alcohol as described in Specification 708,339, primary alcohols as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,479,111, hydrocarbons as described in Specification 540,534, or hydrocarbons as described in Canadian Specification 539,369. The invention also includes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by contact with a solid catalyst in the presence of 50-10,000 milligrams per litre of the organic residue specified above. The hydrogen peroxide may be passed through a bed of silver catalyst as described in Specification 780,342, or in U.S.A. Specification 2,721,788. The residue may be incorporated in the hydrogen peroxide before feeding to the decomposer or may be added separately to the decomposer, for example during start-up only. The mixture of oxygen and steam formed is fed to a combustion zone for reaction with the fuel. Examples describe the decomposition under pressure of electrolytic 90% hydrogen peroxide containing the organic residue by contact with silver wire catalyst and show an increased rate of oxygen evolution, a faster rise in temperature, and improved starting at low temperatures as compared with hydrogen peroxide not containing the residue.
