Abstract

<PICT:0802426/III/1> In the production of carbon disulphide by the catalytic or non-catalytic interaction of sulphur and a hydrocarbon gas at a temperature of 450-700 DEG C., substantially pure sulphur obtained from natural sulphur containing a substantial amount of carbonaceous impurity is used. The natural sulphur preferably contains a maximum of 0.06 per cent as carbonaceous material. An excess of 4-10 per cent of sulphur may be employed. The purified sulphur may be used alone or together with unpurified sulphur. The purified sulphur may be obtained by ordinary distillation, by recovery of excess sulphur used in the production of carbon disulphide using purified or unpurified sulphur, or by conversion of by-product hydrogen sulphide obtained in the production of carbon disulphide using purified or unpurified sulphur. By-product hydrogen sulphide may be converted to sulphur by partial oxidation, or by reaction with sulphur dioxide obtained by the oxidation of by-product hydrogen sulphide or unpurified sulphur. A reactor may be fed initially only with unpurified sulphur and purified sulphur recovered after the reaction may be recycled to the same reactor in admixture with further unpurified sulphur. Alternatively, the purified sulphur may be recycled in whole or in part to a further reactor. Two reactors may be employed in parallel with common sulphur recovery means. The recovered sulphur may be recycled in such a manner that one reactor is fed only with purified sulphur or a mixture of purified and unpurified sulphur containing more than 50 per cent of purified sulphur and the other reactor is fed only with unpurified sulphur or a mixture of purified and unpurified sulphur containing more than 50 per cent of unpurified sulphur. The sulphur feed of the first and second reactors may be periodically reversed. As shown, in a process using two reactors crude sulphur from line 7 and chemically recovered sulphur from both reactors from line 29 may be fed via mixing and storage vessel 8 and line 10 to one reactor, and sulphur from storage vessel and line 8a and recycled excess sulphur from both reactors from line 16 fed via mixing and storage vessel 32 and line 10a to the other reactor. Chemically recovered sulphur from line 29a may alternatively be passed direct to storage vessel 32. Specification 802,425 is referred to.
