Abstract

A heavy duty detergent composition in the form of a homogeneous aqueous suspension comprises (a) a synthetic organic detergent, (b) a condensed phosphate, and (c) sodium carboxymethylcellulose, stabilized by the presence of (d) 0.01-1% by weight of 4 : 41-bis-(411 - methyldroxyethylamino - 611 - phenylamino - 111:311:511 - triazin - 211 - ylamino)-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid of formula <FORM:0948617/C3/1> or an alkali metal salt thereof. Component (a) suitably comprises both anionic detergent in amounts of 4-15%, preferably 6-10% by weight of the total composition and non-ionic detergent in amounts of 2-10%, preferably 2-6% by weight; suitable anionic detergents are alkyl-benzene sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, fatty acid mono-glyceride sulphates, fatty acyl isethionates or taurides in the form of the sodium, potassium, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts, while suitable non-ionic detergents are fatty alkanolamides and alkylphenol polyglycol ethers. The preferred detergents are sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and the mono- and di-ethanolamides of C10-14 fatty acids; soap may also be included in place of part of the anionic detergent, but its presence is not generally desirable. (b) which is usually present in amounts of 10-35%, preferably 15-25%, is preferably a sodium or potassium pyro- or tripoly-phosphate, sodium tripoly-phosphate being favoured. (c) is generally present in amounts of 0.1-1.0%, preferably 0.3-0.75%, and (d) preferably in amounts of 0.02-0.1%. If required, the composition may also include up to 6% of an alkaline alkali metal silicate, and ethanol, perfume and colour may also be incorporated. The composition is suitably compounded by making a suspension of (b) in 1 1/2 times its weight of water, adding (c) dissolved or dispersed in water; (d) is dissolved in water to a quantity 1/3 the weight of anionic detergent, the anionic detergent is added together with the silicate (if any), the mixture then warmed and added to the suspension of (b) and (c), after which non-ionic detergent (if any) colour and perfume are added, followed by water and alcohol to bring the composition to the required concentration. According to the Provisional Specification, stabilizer (d) may comprise any 4:41-bis-(411-alkylhydroxyalkylamino - 611 - phenylamino - 111: 311:511 - triazin - 211 - ylamino) - stilbene - 2:21-disulphonic acid, or salt thereof.
