Abstract
Cyclic alcohols containing 5 or 6 carbon atoms in the ring and a maximum of ten carbon atoms are obtained by contacting the corresponding cycloparaffin at a temperature of 100-180 DEG C. in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of boric acid. The reaction is preferably carried out under reflux to remove heat of reaction and the water produced is removed continuously. Since the boiling-points of the cycloparaffins are below the reaction temperature it is necessary to carry out the process at elevated pressure. The oxygen-containing gas preferably contains not more than 20% by volume of oxygen. The preferred starting material is cyclohexane which is oxidised to cyclohexanol but cyclopentane and alkyl-substituted cyclohexanes and cyclopentanes may also be used.
