Abstract

The pyrolysis of tetraethylammonium borohydride (I) by heating at 185 degrees C for 15-25 hrs. is improved by effecting the reaction at below atmospheric pressure (10-2 mmHg). Used for prodn. of tetraethylammonium decahydrode-caborate. The process results in reduced formation of the by-produced tetraethylammonium dodecahydrodecaborate. The process also permits the recovery of triethylamine-borane (II) by trapping the volatile prods. at liquid air temp. and separating (II) by distillation of the volatile prods.
