Abstract

A surface active composition suitable as a hair rinse or for softening fibres (see Divisions D1-D2) comprises (a) a quaternary ammonium salt of formula <FORM:0947714/C3/1> where R is benzyl or C1- 3-alkyl, R1 is benzyl, C1- 3-alkyl or C12- 18-alkyl, R2 is C12- 18-alkyl and X is an anion, e.g. chloride, acetate, phosphate, sulphate, or methesulphate, and (b) either (i) an ethenoxylated amine of formula <FORM:0947714/C3/2> where R is C8-18-alkyl and n is 15-60, or (ii) an ethenoxylated diamine of formula <FORM:0947714/C3/3> where R is C8-18-alkyl, m is 2 or 3, and x+y+z is 15-60. In (a), the C12-18-alkyl chains may be straight or branched, and saturated or unsaturated, and the weight ratio (a); (b) is preferably 10 : 1 to 1 : 2. (a) is suitably dimethyl-distearyl ammonium chloride or methasulphate, trimethyl-palmityl- or stearyl-ammonium chloride, dimethylbenzyl-stearyl ammonium nitrite or -myristyl ammonium chloride; (b) is suitably N - polyoxyethylene - dilauryl- or -dicocoamine, N - soya - N : N1 : N1 - tripolyoxy ethylene ethylene diamine or N-tallow-N : N1 : N1-tripolyoxyethylene propylene diamine. The composition may be produced in the form of a powder or aqueous dispersion.ALSO:A composition for softening and conditioning fibres, especially cellulosic fibres, comprises (a) a quarternary ammonium salt of formula <FORM:0947714/D1-D2/1> where R is benzyl or C1-3-alkyl, R1 is benzyl, C1-3-alkyl or C12-18-alkyl, R2 is C12-18-alkyl and X is an anion, and (b) either (i) an ethenoxylated amine of formula <FORM:0947714/D1-D2/2> - (CH2CH2O)nH where R is C8-18-alkyl and n is 15-16, or (ii) an ethenoxylated diamine of formula <FORM:0947714/D1-D2/3> where R is C8-18-alkyl, m is 2 or 3 and x + y + z is 15-60 (see Division C5). In (a), the C12-18-alkyl chains may be straight or branched, and saturated or unsaturated and the weight ratio (a) : (b) is preferably 10 : 1 to 1 : 2. In the manufacture of tissue paper, a solution in hot water is added to the pulp, and the mixture digested for 1/2 hr. before felting. A product having surface softness is obtained. With fabrics, the composition is added to the final rinse water after the fabric has been washed and cleaned. For such purposes, the composition is used in concentrations of 0.1-0.3% by weight of the material treated.
