Abstract

A composition for impregnating fibrous material comprises an aqueous dispersion of either an anionic chloroprene polymer or a chlorinated isoprene ploymer, an antioxidant, e.g. 2,21 - methylene bis(4-methyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol), and a substance termed an accelerator and exemplified by zinc oxide. In the preparation of impregnated tape, a length of the fibrous material is pased through a bath of the composition and is then dried, and may be cured, by heating.ALSO:Fibrous material, e.g. porous paper, is impregnated with a composition which comprises an aqueous dispersion of either an anionic chloroprene polymer or a chlorinated isoprene polymer, an antioxidant, e.g. 2,21-methylene bis(4-methyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol), and a substance termed an accelerator and exemplified by zinc oxide, and then coated, without a primer, with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, e.g. with a naphtha formulation of pale crepe natural rubber or pale crepe rubber and light grey carcase reclaim rubber, terpene resin, zinc oxide, a phenol condensation product type antioxidant, an alkyl-phenol sulphide, zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate, zinc benzothiazyl and diphenylguanidine, the adhesive being pre-cured to the desired degree. A release coat from a dispersion or solution of polyvinyl chloride, a polyvinyl chloride and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer blend or an alkyd resin may be used on the side of the tape opposite the side carrying the adhesive.ALSO:A composition for impregnating fibrous material, e.g. porous paper, comprises an aqueous dispersion of either an anionic chloroprene polymer or a chlorinated isoprene polymer, an anti-oxidant e.g. 2, 21-methylene bis (4-methyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol), and a substance termed an accelerator and exemplified by zinc oxide. In the preparation of impregnated tape a length of the fibrous material is passed through a bath of the composition and is then dried, and may be cured, by heating. Tapes so impregnated may be coated, without a primer, with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, e.g. with a naphtha formulation of pale crepe natural rubber or pale crepe rubber and light grey carcase reclaim rubber, terpene resin, zinc oxide, a phenol condensation product type anti-oxidant, an alkylphenol sulphide, zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate, zinc benzothiazyl and diphenylguanidine, the adhesive being pre-cured to the desired degree. A release coat from a dispersion or solution of polyvinyl chloride, a polyvinyl chloride and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer blend or an alkyd resin may be used on the side of the tape opposite the side carrying the adhesive.
