Abstract

Rubber gloves characterized by freedom from splitting of the latex film during drying on the former and resistance to hydrocarbon oils and organic solvents, are manufactured by dipping a former into a liquid composition comprising a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer latex blended with a latex of butadiene/vinyl pyridine, copolymer, withdrawing the former, allowing it to drain to remove excess liquid and setting the film of liquid on the former. The vinyl pyridine copolymer latex may contain a terpolymer of butadiene, styrene and a vinyl pyridine. The vinyl pyridine may be a monovinyl pyridine, a monoalkyl monovinyl pyridine or a dialkyl monovinyl pyridine, 2-vinyl, 3-vinyl, 4-vinyl, 2-methyl-5-vinyl, 5-ethyl-2-vinyl, 2,4-dimethyl-6-vinyl and 2,4-diethyl-6-vinyl pyridines being particularly mentioned. The proportion of butadiene/acrylonitrile latex to butadiene/vinyl pyridine latex should be in the ratio 90:10 to 40:60, equal proportions being preferred. In manufacturing, the former may first be covered with a layer of natural rubber or synthetic rubber of a type distinct from that of the blended latices, or of woven textile material. Either zinc chloride or formic acid in methylated spirit may be employed as the coagulant.
