A fluid control valve comprises a spool 6 reciprocable in a bore 5 formed in a housing 1, an electro-magnet 52 secured to the housing and including an armature 59 linearly movable within a passage 49 and co-operating with the spool through the intermediary of a rod 64 slidable in a guide 40 and means, such as a bore 66 and grooves 63, for maintaining the end of the rod adjacent the spool in permanent communication with each end of the armature 59, the bore, guide and passage constituting a single sealed envelope communicating with the valve exterior only through fluid ports in the housing. In the preferred embodiment, the spool 6 is located in either of two positions to which it is moved by one of a pair of solenoids by balls 35 and annular grooves 31, 32. Each solenoid has a winding 52 supplied through rectifier 53 and an armature 59 mounted in a thin walled tube 49 secured to the guide 40 for a slidable rod 64. A port 29 communicates with end chambers 26, 27 for the exhaust of any pressure fluid which may have leaked past the spool while the bores and passages 63, 66, 67 and 68 allow'fluid to flow into cups 62 which may be deformable to provide an over-riding manual control. The spool locating mechanism may be replaced by a centring spring to give three positions of the valve, one of the solenoids may be replaced by a return spring, a push button sealed by an O ring may be provided for manual actuation and the solenoid windings may be " potted."
