Abstract

Manganese bacitracin stabilized against loss of potency during storage is produced by acidifying the product of the fermentation of a bacitracin - producing strain of Bacillus subtilis in a liquid nutrient medium therefor, adding a water-soluble manganese salt to the acidified fermentation product, precipitating manganese bacitracin by adjusting the pH of the mixture to 6.2-7.8, separating the entire suspended solids from the resulting slurry and drying the separated solids. Alternatively, when the suspended solids have been separated from the slurry, the resulting solid-free liquid may be concentrated, the concentrated liquid added to the separated solids, and the resulting mixture dried.ALSO:A feed supplement contains as the essential active ingredient, the water-insoluble fractions of the fermentation product resulting from the production of bacitracin when a bacitracin-producing strain of the organism Bacillus subtilis is cultivated in a liquid nutrient medium to which is added a water-soluble manganese salt in sufficient quantity to form manganese bacitracin after completion of the fermentation reaction. Other nutrient materials such as Vitamin B12 may be added.
