Abstract

947,380. Vacuum cleaners. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1960 [Dec. 10, 1959], No. 40664/60. Heading A4F. A vacuum cleaner comprises a casing 1 having a cover 2 and a bottom-plate 3, the latter being spaced from the casing to provide a continuous gap 6 through which air from the cleaner is exhausted in the form of a high velocity jet 22 which confines a cushion of air in a space 7 between the bottom plate 3 and a surface 8 to support the cleaner so that it may be moved along the surface. A flange 9 in the casing resiliently supports a housing 10 which encloses a motor and pump (not shown); the housing may be additionally resiliently supported on the bottom plate 3 as shown. Disposed in the upper part of the casing 1 is a dust collector 16 having an attachment such as a brush 20 connected to it by a flexible hose 19. In operation air passes through the collector 16 and apertures 14 into the housing 10 and then out of the latter through apertures 15 into the lower part of the casing 1 to the gap 6. The cushion of air may be formed by the jet 22 or for this purpose additional apertures 23 may be provided in the bottom plate 3. Only part of the cleaner weight may be supported by the air cushion. Brushes 25 are attached to the casing 1 to obviate a tendency of the cleaner to move during operation thereof. The gap 6 may be replaced by a plurality of apertures and the bottom plate 3 may be integral with the casing 1.
