Abstract

1,044,390. Upright vacuum cleaners. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1963 [May 31, 1963], No. 50729/63. Heading A4F. An upright vacuum cleaner comprises a floor engaging suction nozzle 10, a handle 11 (not shown) and an elongated rigid casing 12 interconnecting the two, the upper part of the casing comprising a dust collecting chamber 27a and the lower end of the casing being divided into air impeller and motor chambers 29 and 30 which are vertically superposed when the casing is horizontal. The casing is formed from a front channel-shaped member 23 and a back channel-shaped member which has a panel 20 removable to reveal a dust bag 28. Leads from a cord 19 and a switch 59 (not shown) located within the upper part of the casing are disposed in a channel 64 on the inner face of the front member 23 and are connected to the motor in the lower front of the casing. The cord 19 may be wound on to hooks 21 (not shown) and 22 provided on the panel 20. The suction nozzle 10 is swivellably mounted at the lower end of the casing and a conduit 88 extends rearwardly of the nozzle opening 89 to a conduit 77 formed on the underside of the back of the casing and leading to the air impeller chamber 29 which communicates with the dust bag 28. Air from the dust bag enters the dust chamber and passes through a filter 74 into the motor chamber 30 to cool the motor and is exhausted to the atmosphere through air vents 27. A brush 96 is supported in a carrier 98 on the underside of the suction nozzle and is biased downwardly by spring means for free up and down movement or it can be controlled by a slide 103 which can engage either the upper edge or lower edge of the carrier when the brush is locked in a down or up position respectively. Wheels 13 are provided on the nozzle. The motor comprises a stator 41 having a stack of annular laminations and an armature 40 positioned within the stator on a shaft 36 which extends into the impeller chamber through an opening in the member 32 dividing the lower part of the casing into motor and impeller chambers. The impeller comprises a disc 34 having blades 35 and is mounted on the shaft 36. For cleaning furniture a connector, fitted with a hose, is attached to an opening 81, normally closed by a cover 82, in the back of the casing and cuts the impeller chamber off from the suction nozzle. Floor engaging struts having wheels 18 (not shown) are provided on the connector and support the cleaner in an upright tilted position. The casing may be made of plastics material.
