Abstract
947,327. Making finned tubes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 14, 1962 [March 16, 1961], No. 9728/61. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions F4 and G6] A tube, e.g. of magnesium alloy, has a plurality of fins which extend along the tube in substantially continuous helical paths, the hand of the helical paths changing at least once. The tube may have one or more longitudinal secondary fins acting as splitters which may themselves follow helical paths. The helices may be formed on the finned tube immediately after its extrusion whilst the material is still relatively plastic, by gripping it at a number of points P 1 , P 2 along its length and twisting the tube relative to the said points through varying angles and in different directions. The tubes may be used as nuclear fuel cans, and may be manufactured with internal fins.
