Abstract
858,294. Nuclear fuel elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 16, 1958 [July 16, 1957], No. 22576/57. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXII] A protective can for a nuclear reactor fuel element is made by forming a tubular body portion with a plurality of integral fins along its length, slotting the fins axially and deforming the tip portions of the fin segments so formed. The can body 1 and two groups of fins 2 for heat transfer and 3 for stiffening are made of magnesium alloy extruded through a straight die, and the fins 2 are then slotted and twisted to a helical shape. The can is completed by closure of the ends after insertion of the fuel element. In a modification the body is extruded with helical fins 5, 6 or is twisted as a whole after extrusion. The fins 5 are slotted and then twisted so that their outer edges are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body as shown in Fig. 8 (not shown). If the thickness or the nature of the material of the fins is such that they are difficult to twist they may instead be slotted at an angle normal to the surface of the fin.
