[Also in Divisions B3 and F4] In a method of manufacturing a multichamber pipe, tube or like hollow body a first strip is twisted about its central longitudinal axis to a helical form and one or more further strips are fed obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the first strip and wound about it in such a manner that their pitches correspond to the pitch of the first strip. As shown in Fig. 1, two strips 3, 4 are wound around the twisted first strip 2 so that the longitudinal edges 5, 6 can be welded to the longitudinal edges 7, 8 and 9, 10. Alternatively or additionally, longitudinal strips 12, 19, Fig. 4, may be welded to the helical surfaces of the first strip 2 to form the or further chambers. The strips may have a cross-section other than rectangular, e.g. strips thicker in their central region. The hollow body may be used as a structural element, e.g. in aircraft, or motor vehicles, or as a boiler or heat exchanger tube.
