Abstract

A process for the production of a polymer latex of controlled particle size, comprises a first stage in which an aqueous dispersion of a polymer containing initiating groups is produced by polymerizing in an aqueous emulsion an ethylenically unsaturated monomer using an initiator containing two initiating groups, and a second stage in which in the substantial absence of initiator a further quantity of the same monomer is added and polymerized under the influence of the initiating groups of the polymer produced in the first stage. High solids latices may be obtained. Latices containing small and large particles may be obtained by adding a conventional catalyst near the end of the second stage. In an example styrene is polymerized using p-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide as initiator in media containing soap, sodium pyrophosphate, fructose and ferrous sulphate. The latices find application as coating compositions.
