Abstract

945,943. Centrifugal separators. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. Aug. 26, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959], 29561/60. Heading B2P. An apparatus for removal of impurities from suspensions and comprising a vortex separator 1 discharging impurities into a chamber 6, water supplied by a pipe 12 is periodically cut-off for short periods whilst the inlet 8a and outlet 47 of the chamber are open. The inlet is always open, and the pipe and outlet have valves 13, 7 controlled by a timer 14 so that one valve is closed whilst the other is open. In the modifications shown in Fig. 2, the bulk of the water entering the chamber 31 through the pipe 23 is discharged with impurities through a valve 22 and the rest of the water passes through tube 17 to the separator. During periods in which a valve 24 is open coarse impurities and water discharge through the valve 22 into a settling tank 25, clean water discharging over a weir 26 being returned to the chamber. During periods the valve 24 is closed the valve 22 directs fine impurities to discharge through a conduit 30. The whole or parts of the tubes 8, 17 may be transparent. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) finer impurities are continuously discharged through an outlet in the top of the chamber, and coarser particles are periodically discharged from the bottom of the chamber. Vortex chambers in series may be arranged to discharge impurities into a common chamber.
