Abstract

945,726. Nuclear fuel. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 27, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 35572/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel composition is prepared by heating a mixture of iron oxide and fissile material oxide to melt a substantial proportion of the mixture, crushing the resultant mass, reducing the iron oxide content to metallic iron and then forming a compact of the iron and fissile-metal oxide. Before compacting, e.g. at 2 tons/sq. ins at 1150‹C. for 1 hr, metallic iron powder may be added to the mixture to give the desired final composition. The initial oxide mixture is selected so as to contain more fissile material oxide than the eutectic composition, e.g. it contains 70%-90% by weight of UO 2 or from 50 to 90% by weight of PuO 2 . After heating, the mixture is cooled slowly to produce fissile material oxide particles in the size range 200Á to 300Á. The reduction of the iron oxide is effected by heating to 1000‹C. to 1100‹C. in hydrogen.
