Abstract
945,120. Reciprocating pumps. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. May 28, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 20362/62. Heading FlA. In a diaphragm pump actuated by a reciprocating pump through a liquid column, the phase relationship between the diaphragm and the reciprocating pump is maintained by means acting in response to a fall in output from the diaphragm pump to temporarily increase the displacement of the reciprocating pump. In the embodiment shown, e.g., for pumping radio-active or corrosive liquids, the reciprocating pump is constituted by an hydraulically-actuated diaphragm pump 2 which acts through a liquid column in conduit 14 to reciprocate a pumping diaphragm 9. When a difference in phase develops between diaphragms 9 and 2, the fall in output from pump 9 is detected by sensing means 33, 34 which act to increase the stroke of a variable stroke pump 32 driving diaphragm 2. The pumping chamber volume of pump 2 is greater than that of pump 9 so that, when on its rightward stroke, increasing the stroke of pump 32 and hence pump 2 forces diaphragm 9 to its full right-hand position. Excess pressure in conduit 14 is relieved by valve 29. On the return stroke of the system, diaphragm 9 reaches its left-hand position before diaphragm 2, the remainder of the left-hand stroke of diaphragm 2 acting to draw hydraulic fluid into conduit 14 from a reservoir 25 via a check valve 27. The diaphragms are now in phase again and the normal output of pump 9 is detected by sensing means 33, 34 which act to reduce the stroke of pump 32 to its former value. A reservoir 24 and stop valve 22 may be used for initially filling conduit 14. In another embodiment diaphragm pump 2 is omitted and pump 32 acts directly on the liquid colum in conduit 14.
