Abstract

944,561. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids; linear motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and AJAX MAGNETHERMIC (U.K.) Ltd. May 25, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7085/61. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F4] In a bifurcated launder 1 for discharging molten metal or glass from a furnace, flow through the shoots 2 and 3 is controlled by coaxial coils 4 disposed alongside the launder and connected to the terminals 5 of a symmetrical three-phase electrical supply. If the coils are energized to produce magnetic fields in the direction of the arrows a or b molten metal tends to flow in the direction of the arrows A or B to increase the quantity passing through the shoots 2 or 3 respectively. A modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), has the coils positioned in line across the launder. A coil may be provided for one or each shoot causing an electromagnetic field to impede or to assist the flow of metal. A single phase coil may be used with its magnetic axis aligned with the axis of the shoot, or the coil or coils may be mounted below the shoots.
