1299030 Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids OTDEL FIZIKOTEKHNICHESKIKH PROBLEM ENERGETIKI URALSKOGO FILIALA AN SSSR 19 July 1971 33704/71 Heading H2A An electromagnetic pump for liquid metals comprises a substantially straight conduit 5 located in the clearance between the poles 7 of a multipole electromagnet 3 and the core of a polyphase transformer 1, the transformer having as many pairs of primary and secondary windings as there are poles on the electromagnet such that at each pole of the electromagnet a secondary winding of the transformer produces in the liquid metal in the conduit a current at right angles to the magnetic field so as to propel the metal along the conduit, each secondary winding being formed partly by a conductor 9 extending round the transformer core and partly by the liquid metal itself. The conductors 9 nearest the ends of the transformer core may be offset towards the ends, Fig. 3 (not shown) to reduce eddy current loss. Current leakage in the metal away from the regions where the current and field interact may be prevented by longitudinal partitions 10, Fig. 2 (not shown), disposed in the conduit.
