Abstract

Liquid metal, such as nuclear reactor coolant, is pumped along a straight conduit by the interaction of a magnetic field produced by an airgap circuit and a current induced in the metal by a gapless circuit. The airgap circuit comprises a multi-pole a.c. electromagnet, and the gapless circuit is formed by a polyphase transformer using the liquid metal and an adjacent conductor as secondary windings. The conduit lies between the two magnetic circuits.
