[Also in Division G1] The tension S 1 in the portion of a travelling web leaving the curving end of a pivoted guide plate 1 is given by S 1 .a = P.b, where P is the reaction force indicated by a force-measuring device 6 actuated by deflection of the plate 1. The tension S 2 at the other end of the plate 1 will generally be different from S 1 because of friction, but acts in a plane passing through the pivot axis 4 and so does not influence the reading P. If the tension S 1 is susceptible to variation the variation in P may be used to provide a signal to control mechanism for varying S 2 so as to maintain S 1 constant. To measure S 2 , the pivot 4 is provided in the tangential plane of the curved end of plate 1, the other end being supported by an arm pivotable on the pivot 4. Instead of pivots, plate 1 may be mounted on flexible steel bands or rubber bushings.
