943,704. Catamenial appliances. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Sept. 29, 1961 [Sept. 30, 1960], No. 35301/61. Heading A5R. A sanitary napkin comprises an elongated absorbent core having a tapered rear portion 16 and a pervious cover 12 which extends beyond the core to form attaching tabs 18, the portion of the cover enclosing the tapered rear portion of the core extending inwardly into the rear portion of the core. The core 10 is made of absorbent cotton, wood pulp fibres or synthetic fibres, may be formed in layers and is covered in tissue paper 28. The front portion 14 and more than half the length of the core is of uniform width, the rear portion 16 comprising one quarter to one third the length of the core being tapered by cutting away portions of the core material. In order to conform with the rear portion, inward tucks 20 or pleats are formed in the cover adjacent the side edges 22 of the tapering rear portion. Where the core is made in layers the tucks or pleats extend between them.
