Bottles fed by a conveyer along a rectilinear path have wrap-around labels applied by three devices operating in sequence, the first comprising a pressure pad P, Fig. 9, and wiper pads W<SP>1</SP>, W<SP>2</SP> which apply the central part only of the label L to a bottle, the second consisting of pivoted spring-urged arcuate wiper arms 10, 11, Fig. 6, secured to a resilient presser pad D which applies the mid-portion of the label through an arc of approximately 180 degrees and the third end-wiper device consisting of pivoted, spring-urged and cam-operated arcuate arms 17, 18, Fig. 3, provided with resilient presser pads D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP> arranged to embrace the bottle and apply pressure to the label through an arc of the order of 300 degrees. As described, the labelling machine is of the kind described in Specification 809,475 in which the bottles are fed uninterruptedly by the conveyer and the second and third wiper devices are mounted on an elongate carrier 338, Fig. 1, arranged to move in an orbital path by parallel cranks 333, so that the wipers move with the bottles on the conveyers whilst securing the labels and then return for operation on other bottles. These wiper devices are mounted on the ends of piston-rods 342 secured to pistons which slide in pneumatic cylinders 339 mounted on the carrier 338. Specification 864,625 also is referred to.
