Abstract

809,475. Labelling machines. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO., G. J. Sept. 24, 1956 [June 26, 1956], No. 29125/56. Class 73 In a labelling machine adapted to affix labels whose ends extend more than 270 degrees around a bottle neck, bottles B moved continuously along a conveyer C past a station G where the centres of previously gummed labels are applied to them; they then move past a station L where presser-wipers and rotating brush Wipers situated on opposite sides of the conveyer complete the labelling, the rotating wipers wiping on the two ends of the neck labels successively. The labels are affixed simultaneously to groups of three bottles which are spaced on the conveyer G by a rotating worm 153. Body labels are pressed on at the same time as the neck labels on the lines described in Specification 805,074. At G, picker plates p1, p2 and p3 are gummed by known means 194 and rotate about a shaft 409 to pick up neck and body labels from three magazine plates 400 (Fig. 6, not shown). Each picker separates into two parts 401 and 402 which permit grip fingers 406-408, pivoted on the shaft 409 and having pneumatic suckers 411 and 412; to pass between them and transfer the labels to the bottles B which are meanwhile supported by holders 445b (Fig. 9, not shown) mounted on a shaft parallel to 409. Both the fingers and the holders are made resilient with springs to adapt to the bottle contour and both oscillate along their supporting shafts so as to move alongside the conveyer whilst the labels are applied. The wipers at L are carried on members 338 and 338a having orbital motion transmitted by cranks 336 and 337 on shafts 326 and 327 so as to move alongside the conveyer whilst wiping the bottles. Shafts 422-427 on the member 338a rotate at twice the speed of the shafts 326 and 327 and carry six brush wipers 438, the first three of which rotate in the opposite direction to the second three. Bottle supports with rubber pads mounted on pneumatic rams 34 are situated below the brushes and presser wipers 510 to press on the central parts of the neck and 'body labels are opposite on similar rams 34 on the member 338. The rubber pads at bottle-neck level on the wipers 510 are protected against damage by the brushes by curved metal shields 442 and 443 (Fig. 17, not shown) which also serve to protect the unwiped end of three neck labels at the first wiping station. The mechanically operated components of the labelling apparatus are operated by an electric motor M driving appropriate gearing (Fig. 10, not shown) through a shaft 119.
