A labelling-machine has a plurality of labelling mechanisms to which containers are successively presented by a conveyer means being provided to move the containers relative to the conveyer so that after receiving a label the labelled face is presented to a presser pad and a different face is presented to each labelling mechanism. Containers are transferred from a conveyer 52 by a spider 54 on to platforms 16 on which they are clamped by members 62, not shown. The platforms 16 are rotatably mounted in a plate 10 which is itself rotated about a shaft 12. Mutilated gear members 84 on the shaft of the platforms 16 have concave portions 82 and teeth 290 which co-operate with teeth 292, 302 on a stationary disc 86. Label applying mechanisms 18, 20 have suction pads 122 on arms 124 rotated about a shaft 134 in timed relation to the plate 10. The pads remove labels from a pile 150 in a container 158 and have adhesive applied by a pad 210, mechanism being provided to prevent operation of the pad 210 if a label is missing, and tack it to a container. Presser pads 55 on arms 294 mounted on a disc on the shaft 12 are reciprocated by a cam mechanism to press the labels after they pass from the labelling position. In operation, a container is passed from the conveyer 52 on to a platform 16 and clamped thereon. The platforms 16 rotating about the shaft 12 reach the labelling unit 18 where a label is tacked on one side by a pad 122, continued rotation of the platforms 16 engages one set of teeth 290 of the mutilated gear 84 with teeth 292 on the stationary disc 86 to turn the container 180 degrees about its axis until a concave portion 82 of the gear 84 faces the disc 86 and the tacked label faces the presser pads 55 which are then reciprocated against the container while it is opposite a supporting rail 300. The container is now in a position, as the pressure pads retract, to have a label applied to its opposite face by the mechanism 20, where a similar operation is performed before the container is replaced on the conveyer 52 by a spider 57.
