Abstract

942,713. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 31, 1962 [Sept. 15, 1961], No. 33216/61. Heading H1D. A double-focusing mass spectrometer assembly comprises an ion source 6, an electrostatic analyser 4, an ion beam duct 9 and ion collector 8 all mounted on a frame 2 in a vertical plane, and an independently mounted magnetic analyser 13 which can be adjusted in position relative to the duct. The magnetic analyser comprises a C-shaped electromagnet which can be tilted by adjustment of triangularly spaced threaded rod supports 22. The magnet is mounted on a trolley 27 for movement towards or away from the duct 9. The duct 9 is flexible to allow a small amount of relative movement between the electrostatic analyser 4 and the ion collector 8. Supports 5 for the electrostatic analyser are heat chokes.
