Abstract

923,649. Velocity-modulated tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH Inc. Aug. 30, 1960 [Sept. 21, 1959], No. 29854/60. Class 39 (1). A magnetic frame focusing system for a klystron comprises a pair of spaced polepieces 26, 32, Fig. 2, having coaxial apertures one of the polepieces 26 having a radial passageway therethrough to allow insertion of a klystron into the polepiece apertures. The magnetic frame comprising channel ring 20 and girders 22 and posts 24 is of steel and is mounted on casters. The plate polepiece 26 has a U-shaped radial recess closed by a semicircular and a rectangular magnetic plate, the U-shaped recess allowing the klystron to be inserted from the side. There are four main focusing coils 28 supported by short braces 46 from posts 24 and two auxiliary coils 36, 64, the latter coil being movable so that it can be used for centring the electron beam. Plate polepiece 32 is carried by a magnetic cylinder. An aluminium post 38 and long braces 44 support the three klystron cavities which have resilient fingers engaging the klystron disc seals joined by glass or ceramic collars. The cavity parts are hinged by 38 and held together by clips. The cavities may alternatively be wholly within the envelope.. 52 is a capacitive or inductive tuning mechanism for each cavity.
