Abstract

Silicon carbide in the form of hollow articles or coatings is prepared by pyrolyzing methyltrichlorosilane at 900 DEG to 1800 DEG C. on a former which is kept in motion during the pyrolysis. In an example, a graphite former 1 is supported on wire coils 2 within a silica tube 3 which is slidable on supports 4 outside the coil 5 of a radio-frequency generator 6. A motor and reduction gear 7 effects the movement of the tube 3. Hydrogen gas under pressure in vessel 12 acts as a carrier for the methyltrichlorosilane in bubbler 16, but can by-pass through 17; the gases enter the tube 3 via a silica tube 11. The apparatus is flushed with dry hydrogen before and after the pyrolysis. The temperature of the former is raised to 1450 DEG C. After removal from the tube, some of the graphite of the former is removed by drilling and the remainder burned out of the silicon carbide by heating in air at 900 DEG C. The silicon carbide is in the cubic form. In addition to the linear motion, the former may be rotated during pyrolysis. Th silicon carbide may also be obtained as coatings on particles of fissile materials, e.g. uranium dioxide or uranium carbide, and a fluidized bed may be used.
